6 Signs It's Time to Change Your Fan Belt

Monday, July 5, 2021

You don't want to get stranded on the side of the road. The best way to reduce the chance of having to call for a tow truck to rescue you is to routinely check under the hood.

Have your mechanic check your belts every time you have your oil changed. This allows them to make repairs as they are needed so that your car doesn't break down on you in the most inconvenient of times.

Continue reading to learn how to tell if your car fan belt needs to be replaced. If these things are occurring, you should take your car to your trusty Collegeville mechanic for servicing.

1. Fan Belt Squeaking

The fan belt will squeak when you start your engine when it is time to replace it. It's an annoying car noise that may only last for a few moments, however, the noise will get louder over time due to corrosion. You may also notice the whining noise when your AC or heat is on while you are driving.

2. Flickering Lights

When your fan belt needs to be replaced, you may notice that your lights dim when you start the car. You may also notice that your headlights and interior lights are flickering while you are driving or while the car is idling. This is due to the miscommunication between the fan belt and the alternator.

3. Steering Becomes Difficult

Your power steering may fail when the fan belt needs replaced. You may find yourself fighting to turn the wheel and eventually not be able to steer at all. This occurs because of the belt slipping, and it causes the water pump to malfunction.

4. Car Refuses to Start

When the fan belt is malfunctioning, the alternator belt may not be turning consistently. The alternator is responsible for powering the car's battery and electrics. An alternator that isn't working right may cause the engine to hesitate when starting it. It may even completely prevent the engine from turning over.

5. Engine Gets Overheated

When the water pump is not working due to the fan belt wearing down, your car isn't able to cool down properly. In fact, you will notice a gradual increase in your engine's temperature over time. This happens because the water pump isn't able to cool the engine correctly.

6. Cracks in the Belt

A simple fan belt inspection will tell you if your fan belt needs replaced. Signs of wear on a fan belt might include cracking and fraying. It's important to get a frayed, cracked fan belt replaced before it snaps and you find yourself stranded on the side of the road calling for a tow.

Car Fan Belt Replacement

It's important to have routine maintenance performed on any vehicle that you are driving regularly. If you are having any of these issues, you should have your mechanic replace your car's belts. Replacing the car fan belt should correct all of the issues mentioned above.
