4 Signs Your Car Needs an Engine Replacement

Monday, June 14, 2021

Did you know that almost 30% of drivers ignore their check engine light?

It's easy to ignore when you're in the middle of a drive and you have responsibilities that need your attention. If you ignore it for too long, however, you'll further damage your engine.

There are other important signs that show when you need an engine replacement and they're much harder to ignore. Keep reading to learn all about them!

1. Smoke

When thick smoke comes from your car, it's likely your engine is at the end of its lifespan and needs a fast replacement.

Make sure to keep an eye on both the exhaust and the hood. If you notice dark smoke coming from either of these places, you'll want to start thinking about seeing a mechanic.

2. Strange Noises

Unlike your check engine light, loud knocking noises are impossible to ignore when you're driving. It's a big indicator that there's something wrong that needs immediate attention from an auto body shop.

The most common cause is when the engine bearings break down and leave all of those moving engine parts vulnerable to movement and damage. As soon as you notice any sort of strange sounds, get into contact with your local repair shop to stop anything worse from happening.

3. High Fuel Consumption

Have you noticed that you need to fill up your car's gas tank more often than normal? Do you remember it getting better mileage a couple of months ago?

As engines age, they start to lose efficiency. It's also possible that a fault in the engine is causing other liquids to mix in with the gas. Replacing an old engine is the best fix for this situation.

This is why it's always a good idea to keep track of how many miles you get per gallon. You don't need to track it by exacting numbers but a general idea is enough for you to know when it's time for a new engine.

4. Stuttering and Stalling

An engine that stutters or stalls is an engine that needs help. The inner workings of the engine are no longer strong enough to keep the entire vehicle powered and moving without faltering.

This is a dangerous problem to have because it might stop in the middle of a busy highway. It could stall right as it's struggling to get up a hill and you'll start rolling backward.

This is why it's best to replace the entire engine before any of these emergencies occur. The good news is that the engine replacement cost far outweighs the constant repairs you'll need to make to keep your car running.
