5 Questions to Ask Before Choosing an Automotive Repair Service

Monday, July 6, 2020

On average, there are over 6 million car crashes each year in the United States alone. Even after minor accidents, your car should be checked out for signs of damage to help prevent more serious issues down the road.

With the need for automotive repair service shops at an all-time high, there's no shortage of mechanics in a given area.

But, how can you make sure to choose a high-quality reputable shop? Whether your car needs repair work after an accident or just general maintenance, you need to make sure your car is in good hands.

Keep reading to learn the 5 questions you should ask before allowing a repair shop to work on your car.

1. Are Your Mechanics ASE Certified?

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence offers a certification program for automotive technicians. While the certification isn't a requirement for providing automotive repair services, it's an indicator that a technician has gone above and beyond to get the necessary training to provide high-quality services.

Before choosing a repair shop, ask to see ASE certifications as well as proof of license and insurance to give you peace of mind.

2. Do You Have Experience Working Specifically on My Make and Model?

Depending on your car, you may want to work with a mechanic who has experience with your specific type of car. For example, if you have an older car that is no longer made, you might be better off going to a shop that specializes in repairs on older vehicles.

A mechanic that's familiar with your specific type of car will be able to better understand complex repairs if needed.

3. Do You Have a List of References?

The best way to know what to expect from an automotive repair service shop is to hear from people who've worked with them in the past. Don't be afraid to ask a shop if they have a few references you can contact. And, do your own research as well by reading reviews about the shop online and on social media.

References and reviews can give you an accurate idea of what to expect when you get your car serviced by a specific shop.

4. Can I Get a Written Estimate?

Automotive repair fees can vary, and you never want to feel like you're paying for more than what you're getting. Ask for a written estimate to get a better understanding of what work will be done and how much you can expect it to cost.

Your estimate should show a break down of expected costs for both the parts and labor as well as any other anticipated miscellaneous fees.

5. Will the Parts and Services Be Covered Under a Warranty?

Before you decide to work with a mechanic, make sure you have a clear understanding of what is – and isn't – covered under a warranty. If something goes wrong after your car is serviced, you'll want to know whether you'll be expected to pay for it out of pocket. It's also a good idea to familiarize yourself with what may or may not void your warranty.

Keep any warranty paperwork in a safe place, along with receipts from any maintenance work you get done. Keeping a record of your maintenance history can help prove your car's value if you decide to sell it.
